Our last day in Thailand

Ayutthata, the ancient city of Bangkok.

I managed to get a straight stretch of 5 hours sleep last night. But that meant I was also awake at 2:30 this morning. I wasn't meeting Joanne and Karen until 7 for breakfast in the hotel, so I amused myself by watching a few episodes of The Crown, which I had downloaded from Netflix before I left home.

Our tour today began with our guide and driver picking us up at 8:00 in front of the hotel. Zip! We were off on our way to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, a city in Thailand, about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok. It was capital of the Kingdom of Siam, and a prosperous international trading port, from 1350 until razed by the Burmese in 1767. The ruins of the old city now form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, an archaeological site that contains palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues. The park is on an island between 3 rivers.

We visited 5 different temples today, took a really pleasant boat ride on the river to reach the island, and saw some pretty amazing ruins. We saw monks, (fake) roosters and more Buddha statues than can be counted. I held up pretty well, given my still slightly fragile state. It was hot and muggy, but this whole vacation is going to have hot and muggy weather so I damned well better get used to it!
