NY Alesund

This place is the northernmost community in the world. Population 35 in the winter and about 180 in summer, give or take. It's about 600 miles from the North Pole. It's got a harbor, an airstrip, a small shop, museum and of course - the northernmost post office in the world. I can now say I've visited both the northernmost and southernmost communities and post offices in the world. (Ushuaia in Argentina being the southernmost).

It's essentially a scientific research center with a small number of countries participating and doing various types of research here - climate, marine biology, geology, atmosphere, snow and ice, animals. There are polar bears and reindeer, and a growing population of barnacle geese. I will post some pics of them.
